EEE 463 - Electrical Power Plant
Notice for Fall 2008:
In addition to the on-campus class section, this course will also be offered online via the
Internet. For information on registering for the online section (EEE 591), see the Fulton
Center for Professional Development (or
ASU Engineering Online).
ASU Catalog Description:
Generation of electric power using fossil, nuclear and renewable, including solar, geothermal, wind, hydroelectric, biomass and ocean, energy sources. Power plant thermal cycle analysis. Cogeneration and combined cycles. Economics, operations, and design of electric power stations. Energy storage.
Pre-requisites: CHM 114 (or 116) [chemistry]; MAE 240 (or PHY 241) [thermodynamics];
and MAT 274 (or 275) [differential equations].
Course Objectives: Provide students with a broad understanding of
electricity generation.
The corresponding Course Outcomes are
- Students will have a basic understanding of conversion of coal, oil, gas,
nuclear, hydro, solar, geothermal, etc. energy to electrical energy.
- Students will understand the operation and major components of electric
generating plants.

- M. M. El-Wakil, Powerplant Technology,
McGraw-Hill, 1984 (reprinted 2002).
- p. 4, Table 1-2: change the universal gas constant from "1.545.33" to "1545.33".
- p. 313, just below Equation (8-3): should read "(Table 1-3)" instead of "(Table 1-2)".
- p. 534: change the minus sign (-) to an equals sign (=) between "1353 W/m²" and "1.353 kW/m²".
- Tables A-1 and A-2, the units on specific entropy should be Btu/(lbm·°R).
- Table A-2, the vg value at 100°F should be 350.4 instead of 360.4 ft3/lbm.
