ASU MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement) is a local and national
program connected to Arizona MESA and to MESA USA. Arizona MESA is a collaborative effort
of Arizona’s universities, local school districts, industry, governmental agencies and
community based organizations.
Programs and services are implemented in Arizona primary
and secondary schools through MESA’s statewide office and through the regional centers
located at ASU and UA. The MESA Mission is to increase the number of students who
matriculate and graduate from university with degrees in the math and sciences among
historically under-represented minority and low-income students.
ASU MESA serves over 30 schools in Central Arizona and as far Northeast as the Navajo Indian
and San Carlos Apache Reservations.
Mesa's goal is to reach as many eligible students in Phoenix and other
Arizona communities as possible to increase the number of underrepresented
groups entering professions related to mathematics, engineering and
the physical sciences. Since such fields have attracted a particularly small
percentage of African Americans, Hispanic, and Native Americans, the emphasis
of MESA is to provide intervention programs that begin as early as elementary school
which will encourage academic achievement.
MESA is supported strongly by industry: A.G. Communication Systems, ADOT, ASCE, Pinnacle West,
Arizona Public Service, Boeing, USDOT Federal Highway Administration, Honeywell, Raytheon Systems,
Intel, Medtronic, Motorola, Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), SRP, and TRW Safety Systems.
