Generating
Symbol View
You may want to revisit previous tutorials (
Setting up Unix Environment,
Schematic Entry with Composer) before doing this tutoruial.
In this tutorial, we are going to create a symbol for inverter to create
a hierarchical schematic at the logic gate level.
To create a symbol,
1. Select File --> New --> Cell view in library
manager and choose library under which you would like to create the
new cell view
2. Enter a cell view name and choose Composer-Symbol as
the tool. View name should be symbol exactly according to Figure
11.
Figure 11. Creating a symbol
Then, the symbol editing window should be appeared. It allows you to
draw any kind of shape to represent you logic gate.
The important thing is to have input and output pins match whatever it
is you are representing. In this case, we need to match input pin "IN" and
output pin "OUT"
of the inverter. Rather than drawing an symbol of inverter, it is much
easier to copy one that has already been drawn.
To import a symbol,
1. From Symbol Editing menu, select Add --> Import
Symbol. This brings out Import Symbol form. Click
on Browse and select inverter in library of
NCSU_Digital_Parts. The form should be same like Figure
12.
Figure 12. Importing symbol
2. Put the symbol down in the Symbol Editing like
in Figure 13.

3. Don't forget to save by selecting Design --> Check and Save
in Symbol Editing menu.
