The explosive growth of mobile communications and the increasing need to access information from anywhere and anytime are necessitating researchers and practitioners to figure out state-of-the-art solutions for meeting the expectations of mobile users. Third generation (3G) and systems beyond (e.g., 4G) will offer higher data rates, a wider range of services, greater integration of heterogeneous networks than their predecessors. Successful implementation of 3G and systems beyond requires the development of appropriate radio transmission technologies, wireless application protocols, interworking standards for heterogeneous networks, advanced system prototypes, advanced system modeling and planning tools. 3G and systems beyond will become an attractive solution to providing broadband mobile service delivery.
This special issue of Computer Communications is seeking new and unpublished contributions addressing issues on 3G Wireless and Beyond including, but not limited to:
· System architecture and protocols
· Bandwidth allocation and reservation
· Call admission and control strategies
· QoS issues in wireless multimedia
· Location and mobility management
· All-IP wireless network protocols
· Smart mobile terminal system
· Wireless LAN and ATM
· Broadband wireless mobile and access issues
The main goal of the special issue is to provide a forum for the most recent results on 3G wireless and beyond from the computer communications point of view. This issue is devoted to the current trends, new approaches and challenges to various problems in this very important area.
