Extensive consulting assignments involving projects with over 200 organizations.
General area of professional experience focused on engineering applications
of statistics and operations research methods. Projects have involved design
of experiments and response surface methods, implementation of statistical
process control, process development including characterization and optimization,
time series analysis and the design of forecasting systems, empirical model
building, and the design and analysis of physical distribution systems.
Specific industry experience includes semiconductors and electronics, medical
devices, biotechnology, consumer products, chemical and process industries,
aerospace, and the service industries. Some consulting clients include
Motorola, AT&T, Boeing, IBM, The Coca-Cola Company, Lucent Technologies,
Dial Corporation, Dow Chemical, Amoco, Georgia-Pacific, Monsanto Chemicals,
Alcoa, and Eli Lilly.

DOUGLAS C. MONTGOMERY
BIOGRAPHICAL DATA
Dr. Douglas C. Montgomery is Professor of Industrial and Management
Systems Engineering at Arizona State University. He was the John M. Fluke
Distinguished Professor of Manufacturing Engineering, Directory of Industrial
Engineering and Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of
Washington in Seattle. He was a Professor of Industrial Systems Engineering
at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He holds BSIE, MS and Ph.D. degrees
from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He was a member of the Industrial
Engineering and Operations Research Faculty at Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
Dr. Montgomery's professional interests include several aspects of applied
statistics and quality and reliability engineering, including design of
experiments, time series analysis and forecasting, and applications of
linear models. He also has interests in operations research and statistical
methods applied to modeling and analyzing manufacturing systems. He has
lectured extensively throughout the Americas, Europe and the Far East.
He was a Visiting Professor of Engineering at the Monterey Institute of
Technology in Monterey, Mexico, and a University Distinguished Visitor
at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Montgomery has conducted basic research
in empirical stochastic modeling, process control, and design of experiments.
His research has been sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, the National
Science Foundation, the United States Army, and private industry. He has
supervised 20 doctoral dissertations and 35 masters theses.
Dr. Montgomery is an author of eleven books, including Applied Statistics
and Probability for Engineers (1994, with G.C. Runger), Design and
Analysis of Experiments, 4th edition (1997), Introduction
to Statistical Quality Control, 3rd edition (1996), Introduction
to Linear Regression Analysis, 2nd edition (1992, with E. A. Peck)
), and Forecasting and Time Series Analysis, 2nd edition (1990,
with L. A. Johnson and J. S. Gardiner). Professor Montgomery has authored
research papers that have appeared in many journals, including the Journal
of Quality Technology, Technometrics, Management Science,
Naval Research Logistics Quarterly, IIE Transactions,
Communications in Statistics, IEEE Transactions on Reliability, Quality
and Reliability Engineering International, IEEE Transactions on Semiconductor
Manufacturing, Quality Engineering, Operational Research Quarterly,
International Journal of Production Research, Journal of
Spacecraft and Rockets, and Transportation Research. He has
served as the Applied Probability and Statistics Department Editor and
as the Quality and Reliability Engineering Department Editor for IIE
Transactions and as an Associate Editor of the Naval Research Logistics
Quarterly. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Quality and
Reliability Engineering International, and is currently the Editor
of the Journal of Quality Technology.
Dr. Montgomery's industrial experience includes engineering assignments
with Union Carbide Corporation and Eli Lilly and Company. He also has extensive
consulting experience with many national and international organizations.
Dr. Montgomery is a Fellow of the American Society for Quality Control,
a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, and a Fellow of the Institute
of Industrial Engineers, and he has held several national offices in these
societies. He is a member of the honorary societies Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma
Xi, Mu Sigma Rho, and Alpha Pi Mu. Dr. Montgomery was named Puget Sound
Outstanding Industrial Engineer of the Year in 1986 and Engineer of the
Year for 1987 by the Puget Sound Engineering Council. He is a recipient
of the Shewhart Medal, the William G. Hunter Award, the Brumbaugh Award,
and the Shewell Award from the American Society for Quality Control. He
is also a recipient of the Ellis R. Ott Award. He has also received several
outstanding teaching awards, including the Arizona State University Engineering
College Graduate Teaching Excellence Award in 1994.
