Research Overview

Philosophy
In our opinion, an effective method for attaining high visibility and quality results in research efforts is by publishing in the referred literature. A seminal publication may be cited for decades. It is crucial that students learn that the development of new knowledge is not complete until the research community at large is informed. There are other dimensions of developing new knowledge through research leading to publication including external funding support, equipment acquisitions, gifts and grants, technology transfer, and organizational development. Research is a central role of the modern university and quality publishing is a cornerstone of our approach to being a professor.

Many of our publications are derived from graduate student theses and dissertations completed under our supervision and are direct results of funded research projects that we have directed or co-directed. Our projects typically have deliverables that include novel algorithms and software for enhanced decision support in manufacturing systems. A lengthy table  summarizes our funding support history. That table includes a project description, names of collaborators, and a list of graduate research assistants. Most projects were multiple year projects where successful reviews were necessary to receive continued funding. Collaboration with other universities is involved, and both government and industry sponsors have supported our work.

The ongoing media dialog about the conflict between teaching and research is based on a misconception about how research at a university works and what teaching means. Typically, research involves a project that directly includes graduate students. This is particularly true of funded research projects. Students need to be TAUGHT how to do research and the format is the age-old apprenticeship method. It is a system that we observed and learned from at its best during our Ph.D. days at Purdue, Stanford and Texas A&M Universities. We take a strong interest in the research experience of all students with which we come in contact - not just when serving as their chair. This interest has a selfish component, too - our work is impossible without them. Most of our graduate students co-publish with us and have served on our funded projects. They also have, in turn, taken jobs at research laboratories and universities. This section will include
