About Tau Beta Pi:
Tau Beta Pi is the second oldest Greek-letter honor society in
America; the oldest is Phi Beta Kappa. Both societies are well known
and respected throughout the United States. The latter is restricted
to students in the liberal arts, while Tau Beta Pi is designed to
"offer appropriate recognition for superior scholarship and
exemplary character to students in engineering."
The Arizona Beta Chapter of Tau Beta Pi was established March
9th, 1963. Since then it has been one of the major student organizations
on campus. Tau Beta Pi is not only an honor society to pay tribute
to outstanding students; it also provides a vehicle for such students
to assume a role of leadership in the college and to be of distinctive
service. Tau Beta Pi members are active in engineering student publications,
the engineering recruiting project, and in a variety of other honor
societies and student organizations. Tau Beta Pi is one of the most
prestigious engineering societies to which you can be elected as
an undergraduate.
Membership Requirements:
Membership in Tau Beta Pi is by invitation only.
Undergraduate students must be in the top 1/8th of
the junior class or top 1/5th of the senior class to be scholastically
eligible for membership. The second requirement of exemplary character
is determined by the chapter. Demonstrating this requirement usually
requires some activity such as participating in a project.
Graduate students must meet the top 1/5th requirement
or have a letter of recommendation from their primary advisors plus
have completed at least 50% of their coursework including research.
Persons who have achieved eminence in engineering
may be elected to membership without regard to collegiate records.
If they graduated from a recognized engineering college, they must
have been engaged in engineering for at least 10 years; if not,
they must have practiced engineering for at least 15 years. Such
candidates are usually recommended by members who know them. The
required degree of eminent achievement is left to the chapters'
discretion; and candidates are further considered on the basis of
exemplary character.
If you have already graduated, you would need to have
graduated in the top 1/5th.
If you feel you meet our scholastic requirement but
you have not yet been invited, then you are encouraged to contact
the president
of the AZ Beta chapter of Tau Beta Pi at ASU.
